New Mexico mountain bikingQuestion: We will be in Albuquerque and Santa Fe for a few days this fall and would like to know if there are any biking trails nearby and where to rent gear.
J. Loux Adventure Adviser: Close to Albuquerque is Elena Gallegos, a park that encompasses a large section of the foothills of the Sandia Mountains, the range east of Albuquerque. From 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., you can ride a multitude of trails ranging from easy to difficult. Pick up a trail guide at the park entrance or call 505-857-8334 for information. To get to Elena Gallegos, take the Tramway exit off Interstate 25, but call first for directions because the road is unmarked. For more information on trails, call Big River Bike, 505-294-6800, which runs tours and rents mountain bikes. For more immediate vertical access, you can take chair lift rides at the Sandia Peak ski area from Thursday to Sunday. It's $10 for the day if you bring your own bike, or you can rent a bike and helmet and ride all day for $35. Call 505-242-9133 for more information. There is abundant biking terrain around Santa Fe. Singular Journeys at 125 E. Palace Ave. (505-986-8920), which runs bike tours, can help you narrow down your choices. Bikes and accessories can be rented from Palace Bike Rentals at 409 E. Palace Ave. (505-984-2151) or New Mexico Bike'N'Sport, 905 S. St. Francis Dr. (505-820-0809), which has full-suspension rigs for $30 a day. If you end up bringing your own wheels, stop in at Coyote Bicycle Shop, 1722 St. Michaels Dr. (505-471-1682), and pick up the essential Santa Fe Area Mountain Bike Trails by Craig Martin.
